opens IMAGE file Walter Cronkite’s passing was a moment for reflection for our whole nation. After all his voice was the voice of the major historical events of the second half of the 20th century. Most news coverage focused on his announcing the death of President Kennedy and it was definitely a major moment but for my memory his coverage of the civil rights movement had the greatest impact. It seemed that every significant incident of the 50’s and 60’s civil rights campaign was described in his unique voice while my family sat at the T.V. just before dinnertime. By simply describing the criminal acts that were focused on the civil rights activists Mr. Cronkite let the facts speak for themselves. His credibility was never more effective in exposing the hypocrisy of our nations stance on the words of our Constitution that states “all men are created equal.” He set a standard that has endured throughout the news industry and he will be remembered as a giant in that field.
