Orange County school children will be doing a little more outdoor exploring and learning thanks to a boost from Laker legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Officials announced a collaboration between Abdul-Jabbar’s Skyhook Foundation and the Orange County Department of Education’s Inside the Outdoors during a program at Edison Elementary School in Anaheim.

The OCDE program provides environmental science and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) experiences inside the classroom and on field trips.

More than 3,000 pairs of Adidas shoes and backpacks were donated to students at Edison and six other schools in the Anaheim Elementary School District to celebrate the new partnership.

Abdul-Jabbar, who is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, was a member of six NBA championship teams and played the final 14 seasons of his career with the Lakers.

His Skyhook Foundation, named for his signature shot, already partners with the Los Angeles Unified School District on connecting students with the outdoors, including through its Camp Skyhook.
