Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will present a free public lecture on Thursday, March 8 at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.

The lecture is part of the University of Arkansas’ student-sponsored Distinguished Lecture Series. The event is open to the public and no tickets are needed.

The arena’s south entrance doors will open at 6 p.m, and the lecture will begin at 7 p.m.

Abdul-Jabbar is best known as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and a six-time NBA champion, but he’s also a social justice supporter, best-selling author, motivational speaker and cancer survivor.

He has appeared in movies and on television, and wrote a regular column for Time magazine on a variety of social issues. He developed the Skyhook Foundation aimed at bringing educational opportunities to children in under-served communities, and most recently published “Becoming Kareem: Growing Up on and off the Court,” a memoir for young readers.

In 2016 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

The Distinguished Lecture Series is a student-funded program. Speakers are chosen by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

Recent speakers have included journalist Bob Woodward, science educator Bill Nye, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and anthropologist Jane Goodall.
