This was the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar we never got to see during his six seasons in Milwaukee in the 1970s, when he almost single-handedly put the Bucks on the map, led the franchise to its only NBA title and redefined the center position, terrorizing opponents with his signature “skyhook” shot.
Back then, the word used most often to describe Abdul-Jabbar off the court was “aloof.” He was introverted, wary, mistrustful of people he didn’t know and admittedly had a poor relationship with the media.
“Coach (John) Wooden wouldn’t let us talk to the press (at UCLA),” Abdul-Jabbar said. “He regarded them as a nuisance. I brought that with me to the NBA. It was very unfortunate, and I paid the price.”
